I want this post, the first entry for 2009 to focus on what it is we love about candles! Put your responses in the comments section!

For me I love the romantic lighting and the romantic mood that the right scent can bring out. There is something heavenly about them, that glow. Plus I love how they make my house smell! Makes me happy!

Hand Poured Candles

Hand Poured Candles are all the rage these days. I predict they will become more saturated in the candle market and will be the hot item for a long time. Hand poured candles means each candle is made by a person, not a machine!! Each candle is unique. Each candle is home made & home made is always better.
But, with all this need for hand poured candles, there are some companies out their that claim to have hand poured candles but do not! I have been very upset by their salespeople claiming these candles are hand poured and at the same time handing me a newsletter with a picture on the front page of a machine pouring the wax into their glass containers!! That's sure doesn't look hand poured to me!! This makes me and other tried and true candle makers pretty angry! We work hard to produce you the hand poured candles you desire. Done with our own bare hands, not a machine's spout!!
So please, next time you are in the market for hand poured candles, make sure they are truly hand poured. Not only is it supporting false advertising, its hurting the candle maker that pours their heart & soul into our candles.

Shame On You!

I have conducted an experiment and I am outraged! I went to a few well known stores and bought candles. I tested those candles for scent throw (how well you smell the fragrance). I dissected them to see the waxes used. Well my friends, I was completely disturbed as to what I found!
Most of these candles are scents around an unscented, uncolored wax core! What does this mean? This means that many candles that you buy are not scented through out the entire candle, only on the outside! This is why you will get a great scent throw when you first light the candle, but not after burning it for a while. The melted wax pools down over the unscented core and covers it with the scented covering, and you are none the wiser!
I am not going to name names, I am not going to tell you from which stores! But I will tell you that not all candle companies will rob you like this! Mine is one of them. I scent my candles through & through! So please rest assured not all companies are like this!
Bottom line, buyers beware!

Wooden Wicks

Its getting pretty popular. I have seen it in more & more stores. I'm talking about wooden wicks! Have you seen them yet? Have you tried them yet? This will change the candle burning experience as you know it.
Wooden wick candles are basically a candle with a wick made out of wood. It is a treated piece of cedar, & NO its not a Popsicle stick! It is reminiscent of a camp fire. It even crackles as it burns! Also give off a slight woody scent. I prefer my wooden wicks with spicy herbal scents to compliment the woody scent.
There are some downfalls to the wooden wick. It is sooty. I recommend using it in the fireplace or outside on your porch or patio. But if you don't mind the soot it is a wonderful candle. Its very long lasting and gives you an even burn (wax burns evenly down the glass jar).

Get to know the waxes

There are a few waxes on the market you should get to know. We have paraffin, which your probably most familiar with; gel, a jelly like wax; soy, or all natural vegetable wax; and beeswax, made from you guessed it, bees!
Paraffin is the wax most candles are made from. Its is a cheap wax that is easy to work with. It does have some chemicals in it that may irritate some sensitive people. In fact there is much debate as to how safe these waxes actually are. This wax comes in a hard form for free standing candles and a soft form for container candles.
Gel wax in a bouncy jello like wax. It is mostly oil based and is a bit difficult to work with. Only certain scents may be used in this wax and air bubbles is always an issue. This wax as well contains some harsh chemicals. Not as cheap as the paraffin wax, but may be used in "forever candles" which you don't burn you simply use as decoration.
Soy wax in a wax made of vegetables. It is an all natural wax that burns clean. This means you will get far less soot than the paraffin and gel waxes. It hold scents pretty well, but since there are no preservatives the shelve life isn't nearly as long as the synthetic waxes.
Beeswax is known to be the finest of all the waxes. Creamy and strong it even has its own slight scent of honey. But it is extremely expensive and not very well known at the moment.
Which wax is right for you? Only you can answer that question! Until then have fun figuring it out.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential Oils are compounds from plants that have an aroma. These compounds smell just like the plant that it came from.
We use them in cosmetics, beauty products, perfumes, bath products, flavoring drinks & food, cleaning products, and candle products. They are also used in medical treatments helping a range from skin to serious illness.
Its use in aromatherapy & massage in more recent times have made essential oils come into the forefront of popularity. This stems from the category called alternative medicine. In this system it is believed that certain oils have certain healing qualities.
There are dangers to these oils. They should not be applied to the skin in a concentrated form. The oils must be put into something called a carrier oil (olive, almond, hazelnut, or grape seed). Some oils are also susceptible to sunlight making it easy to burn. So, please use with care!!!

Why Does My Candle Produce So Much Soot?

There can be many answers to this question. Many times its the environment that the candle is lit in. Is the surface flat? Is there a draft? Was the wick trimmed to 1/4" before lighting it? All of these factors play a role in a well lit candle.
Also, if a wick is too big for the candle sooting may occur. If the wick is not straight through the candle sooting may occur. Some wicks are made with materials that soot more than others. Also some waxes produce more soot than others.
So, if you want to have less sooty candles make sure you burn them on a flat surface away from drafts with a trimmed wick with each lighting session. Also using soy or bees waxes will help.
Some things which you may not be able to control such as wick selection, size & placement may be a factor. But trying the suggestions above may help you out.

For Those In Real Estate

How is the world of real estate today? Pretty competitive? Feel lost among the droves of houses, properties, & agents out there? Make yourself stand out when showing your houses! Make your properties seem as enticing as possible.

Besides your basic list of having the listing clean & tidy, knowing the community the property is in, & showing off the assets- make it smell nice!! We were at an open house a few weeks ago and the place smelled like a wet dog. I'm sure that will detract a few people.

Sure, you can use febreeze or put a log of cookies in the oven, but why not let every opportunity you can have to make this place memorable? How about a bakery candle? Not only will it smell like the real thing but it will look like it too! Baking in the oven you will not see that pastry that may make that person think of "home". Seeing a bakery candle will fulfill the scents of smell, vision, & originality. They will remember the little details you put into your presentation & people appreciate that.

Candle Safety Tips

Always important:
-Store candles in a cool, dark, and dry place.
-You can remove dust and fingerprints from a candle by gently rubbing the surface with nylon or a dry or slightly damp soft cloth.
- Wax drippings can be removed from most candle holders by running hot water over them. Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax from a glass votive holder. It might scratch or weaken the glass, causing it to break during a future use.
-Avoid burning candles in any glass item not designed for candles.
-Votive holders will clean more easily if you add a few drops of water to the glass before inserting the candle. But do not add more than a few drops or the wick will absorb the water and not burn properly.
-Avoid placing candles in a direct sunlight or harsh indoor lighting. They may fade.
- A properly burning candle should look like a steady tear drop shaped flame, with no flickering or wisps of smoke.
-Constant flickering and smoking means the flame is disturbed.
- Too much OR too little air reaching the flame cause soot. To avoid it, burn candles in a well ventilated room away from drafts, vents, or string air currents.
- A wick that is too long causes the flame to grow too long and flare. You must cut the wick to 1/4" before every use.
-Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, & debris.
- If you group candles make sure they are at least 3" apart when burning.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always keep it in your site.
-Never burn a candle near or on anything that might catch fire.
-Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
- Always use an appropriate candle holder and place it on a stable, heat resistant surface.
- Read the labels and follow instructions carefully.
- Extinguish any candle if it smokes, flickers repeatedly, or if the flame becomes too high. Cool, trim wick, check for drafts, and re-light.
-Don't allow flame to come too close to the container or holder. Discontinue using when it is with in 2" of holder or 1/2" of container bottom.
- Never move a lighted candle votive or container candle where the wax is liquid.

What are the candle trends of today anyway?
I have noticed a big serge in all natural waxes. Soy wax (a vegetable wax) being the most popular at the moment and beeswax. Beeswax is very expensive, soy wax is much more affordable. Both waxes burn cleaner than paraffin waxes do. Plus using an all cotton wick also helps with a cleaner burning candle.
"Spa" like packages are also in vogue today. Scents meant to energize you, relax you, purify you, etc. These candles not only have to smell good, but must also do their job! Aromatherapy at its best.
Reed diffusers are also on the rise. These are perfect for those who do not want to light a candle. You can still get your favorite scents in form of the reed diffuser. They are also becoming fancy with different colored oils or pretty stones in the bottles. My reed diffusers are now available with wood roses to add with the reeds. They work well in the diffusers & look very pretty. (My reed diffusers will be up on my site soon, but if you want them you can still order them if you email me at mariesgelcandles@aol.com )

Welcome to my blog, Does That Make Scents.

This blog is focused around those who love candles! We will talk about waxes, scents, wicks, candle fads, etc. So if you love candles please check in once in a while. We would love your input.
